MyFamily trials

with BT

In Q1 2020, TrustElevate conducted trials with BT as a part of the UK Government’s VoCO (Verification of Children Online) project. Read more below.

The UK Government identified and trialled a robust age assurance solution in the ground-breaking

Verification of Children Online (VoCO) project

The age assurance solution was TrustElevate

In Q1 of 2020, as part of the VoCO project’s tech trials, BT integrated TrustElevate’s API as part of their MyFamily (family management) offering in order to enable parents to manage their child’s access to apps

Protecting children online and creating a trusted data contract

The technical trials of TrustElevate's solutionadvanced the programme of work ultimately built to lead up to the roll-out of our age assurance technology, in line with the Government’s strategic goal of making the UK the safest place in the world to be online.

Where previously industry stakeholders had argued that an age verification solution for under 18s was impossible to implement, either because of a dearth of hard identifiers in the child population or because increased friction would increase user drop-off exponentially, our solution demonstrated that VoCO, as envisioned by DCMS and the Home Office was indeed possible and sustainable in the context of the digital ecosystem.

This has led to a progression in the conversation around implementing Online Harms strategies and enables enforcement of, for example, the Age Appropriate Design Code which, in fact, mentions third-party age verification providers with reference in particular to attribute systems – the kind leveraged in our technology.

The VoCO programme of work aimed to enable digital parenting in all settings, and that includes vulernable children in exceptional environments. There is a clear and present need for the development of guidelines, policies and supporting programme of education, assessment and oversight for social workers and foster carers. In particular, as a child passes through the care system and the authorised holder of parental responsibility for a child begins, transitions and terminates.
